KITCHEN ISLAND IDEAS WITH SINK
hi. i'm mitzi and we are continuing our boomersmartkitchen series. and on this post, we are talking about lighting. lighting as a design principleis probably on my top, top, top of objectives that i accomplish in every project i workon. i take no prisoners when it comes to lighting. there is never enough… there's never toomuch lighting, that's why we have dimmers. i have yet, in a zillion decades, well, reallyjust three, of designing, have i ever had a client, friend or family say there was toomuch lighting. it's like you can't have enough garlic, too much garlic. lighting is the sameway. so, we're going to talk briefly, because peopleget degrees in lighting, we're going to talk briefly about the types of lighting. and inany space, i believe and the experts who,
besides me, believe that there should be generallighting, which is ceiling, task lighting, which is like over the sink or the stove, and ambient lighting, which i'm going to show you the effects of ambient lighting, how idid on the island. so, since in other vlogs that i think youwould enjoy learning about our island and why it's so important, it would not be thiseffective, had we not done such specific lighting techniques here. so, over this island, wehave three regular cans, but also i learnt from a design expert, eons ago, about innerspacing mr16s. those are much smaller than a mini can, mini can, but, and they're pricy.so, in allowing the overall budget of a home, it's very wise to allocate extra lightingexpenditures for your most important areas.
excuse me, and not take a lighting budgetand equally disperse it amongst the house. find your most important areas and the kitchencertainly is right up there, the kitchen and the bathroom for lighting.so, this lighting i can turn down the lights and the reason those mr16s are so effective, and of course they're on dimmers, is i can dim the regular cans and showcase whereveri choose to showcase. i can turn off the mr16s and just dim down the others and have moreambient lighting. i can have it all on full board and when we're cooking or needing itfor a work area or what not. but it is very important, i think, to have different typesof lighting in all your areas, but especially your kitchen. so, the other… i have placedthe lighting in my kitchen, my task lighting
is over the stove and it's over the sink, over the bar area. but one of the most important areas for us to have lighting is on the counter, because even here, you're seeing, if i come up here you might be able to see it more clearly.as i stand here, the lighting that's in the ceiling is behind me, creating shadows. ifi didn't have this lighting on, i would really have shadows. you see the shadows, how darkthis is? and this is what the majority of cooks and people in, in work areas, in kitchenshave to live with. that's just silly, when we know better.these are xenon and i love them. there's… there's led, we're at led lighting now. thatis, you know, forever lasting. so, this has been a quick, brief description of lightingthat is ever, ever so critically important.
most projects are compromised by not enoughlighting or incorrect lighting. and if you have to use fluorescent, for heaven sakes, there's color toned fluorescents now. and of course led is the big baby of everybody, loved, but anyway. so to end this, show you our ambient lightingin our kitchen, i often at the end of entertaining, or at the end of the day, when i'm going togo sit in a comfy spot, i'll turn these on, go have a nice little glass of red wine andcall it a day. so, until the next time – be boomersmart.
