[music] announcer: [0:08] in this video, you willlearn how to install your backsplash, what products to buy before you start your backsplash, where to purchase tile installation materials. ron: [0:16] hi, i'm ron. i'm with hb fullerconstruction products. i'm the retail technical manager. and at hb fuller we make floor settingsystems such as tile, mortars and grouts. and today, we're going to show you how toinstall tile backsplash. [0:30] here with me is linda. we're goingto tile her backsplash today. we've got some new innovative product options that we'regoing to go through with linda to see what we can do to meet her long term needs.

linda: [0:39] in my project, what i want, most importantly, are products that are easy to use. i want benefits built into them suchas stain resistance and grout, because i don't always want to be just scrubbing my tile andmy grout. [0:51] the one thing i found confusing, though, when i was shopping for products, is that you don't know what to buy. now, i have aporcelain tile and i want a stain resistant grout, but i couldn't decide what to select. ron: [1:02] well, linda, at hb fuller constructionproducts, we've developed our tec skill set brand of products. you have with the porcelaintile, we have porcelain tile mortar. you wanted stain resistant grout, we have our power groutwith stain resistance built into it.

[1:19] now, we're going to mix your mortar.we're just going to add the powder to the water. [1:38] and you're going to want to start outslow. [1:51] i'll take that. linda: [1:52] thank you. ron: [1:56] what we did, we mixed it for twoto five minutes. now we're going to let it slake. it means we're going to let it sitfor 10 minutes to let all the material in the mortar hydrate. then we're going to mixit again for another one to two minutes, and we'll be ready to set your tile.

[2:15] all right. our mortar's mixed. we'reready to set tile. we're going to take some of our mortar on our trowel, put it on thewall. linda: [2:28] how do you know how much youneed? ron: [2:30] the trowel puts down the rightamount of adhesive for you. it does all the work for you. we're going to spread it withthe notches. and you want to make sure you spread it all in one direction. you want tokeep it at a 45 degree angle and just let the trowel do the work. now, you'll take yourtile, and you'll just set it right into the mortar. and you want to make sure you pressit in firmly, and we have some sections precut. we're just going to slide it right in thespace here.

[music plays over background chatter] ron: [3:31] press it in firmly. linda: [3:39] wow. that's easy. ron: [3:44] so, we're going to grout now,and we're going to use the tec power grout, like i said before. it's very stain resistant.never need to seal this. once it dries, it'll be easy to maintain, you never have to doanything with it. [3:56] it dries very quickly. if we were usingthis on the floor, you'd be able to walk on it within four hours. [4:01] let's mix it up.

linda: [4:03] ok. the label copy makes itvery easy to read. the line art is very clear on how much water you need to mix it with.and it also mentions the mix time and the slaking time, just like it did with the mortar. ron: [4:19] pour it in slowly. linda: [4:34] we've mixed it according tothe package directions. let it slake. remixed it. now what do we do? ron: [4:41] we're going to put it in the tile.you're going to scoop out some of the grout, and you're going to pack it into the joints.and you want to make sure you get it in there real good.

linda: [5:07] oops. this is pretty easy, ron,but i think i need to practice my technique a little bit. ron: [5:13] well, you've got plenty of roomto practice. linda: [5:16] will you do the part aroundmy outlet so i don't electrocute myself? ron: [5:20] we have another tool, anotherfloat that's smaller so you can get right in, in tight spots with it. [5:36] what we're going to do now is removethe haze from the tile. and one of the biggest mistakes people make when they remove thehaze is they use too much water. [5:44] so, what you want to do is have a cleanbucket of water with your sponge and you want

to make sure you wring it out very well. youtake your sponge and keep it nice and flat on the surface and you do a circular motion. linda: [6:01] i see. ron: [6:02] and that's going to do a couplethings. that's going to cause friction that'll break the grout free from the surface of thetile. and as you can see, it's smoothing out your grout joints. [6:22] so after you get it smoothed out, you'regoing to take your sponge and rinse it out again. now you're going to take your spongeand keep it flat. and you're going to come across the tile at a 45 degree angle, andyou're going to wipe it off.

linda: [6:48] oh, now you can see the tile. ron: [6:50] does that look a little better? linda: [6:52] a lot. so we need to get thisdone. ron: [6:56] let's get busy. [music plays] ron: [7:01] 45 degree angle to the grout. linda: [7:07] ron? ron: [7:08] yeah? linda: [7:09] i can't tell you how easy thiswas. and this installation looks awesome.

the use of the tec skillset mortar and thepower grout really made this job easy. i can't thank you enough. ron: [7:21] well, i'm glad you allowed usto come into your home and show you how to do this. and remember, our products are soldnationwide at lowe's. if you're unsure of where to start, we make it super easy foryou to select your products online by using our online product selector tool. simply visittecskillset.com/productselector and enter a few details about the tile installationthat you're planning, and we'll make your decision process even easier, providing youwith a shopping list to bring to your closest lowe's store.
