65 on friday with scattered storms. if you have outdoor plans today you are just fine. tomorrow is mary kay -- the first day of spring. for many of us it is a time to update and freshen up our homes.

joining us is designer julie howard to talk about decorating trends and this is one of the things i love doing in the spring because i feel like this is the time to reassess. it is good to redecorate. you can enjoy it all summer. you have some great

suggestions. one of them is great. admittedly i watch hdtv all the time. kitchens are a place where people are entertaining and pantries are becoming more and more important. need a place to put the toaster

, a place to put the coffee maker. people don't want to see it. people are not using formal dining rooms as much as the islands. kitchens are becoming more beautiful and utilitarian part is transitioning more towards

the pantry. it's one of those things where when it comes to the pantry, i feel like different people have different needs. depending on if you have little kids or if you are a wine connoisseur. the pantry can be small or big.

let's talk about another trend for spring which is wallpaper. i saw this when i was reading this and i thought oh my gosh. [ laughter ]. you think the city is wallpaper and paisley but talk to me about how wallpaper has been updated.

wallpaper doesn't have to go on all four walls. if you are nervous you can try one wall where the ceiling is a great place for wallpaper. if you are worried about patterns, bringing in texture with grass cloth and there are so many fake grass claws there

are great ones out there. it is a great way to go. i love the grass cloth but it can get expensive. is the faux grass cloth better? much better for children. regular grass cloth is a natural toxin. if you brush up against an it

can spray so it's difficult with younger kids unless you put it up high. the faux grass one won't do that. some of the staff, i see this in stores in think i can put that in my house but it's amazing how much it becomes a

statement piece when you talk about lighting. lighting is the statement piece. of interior design. don't overlook lighting. for a while candlelight was all anyone was doing. people are coming back to

fixtures that add personality. so don't be scared of it. it doesn't always have to match all the finishes. so have fun with that. change it up. like you would change up accessories. really affordable light

pictures out there. i went into someone's house and i said i love your picture and she said it was $20. and it looked so high end. finally let's talk about living in a subdivision because some people say every house looks the same and you are

saying that is not the case anymore. i work as an in-house designer for trails. we are trying to mix it up with everybody going on pinterest, they are expecting more. they don't just want plain walls of little trim.

they want big crown and wainscoting and beautiful kitchen. everything we talked about. there is a lot of options out there. and we try to make sure we have different price points for everybody.

looking for new construction. it is refreshing to hear that's good. julie, thank you for joining us. for another look@herideasgotocbschicago.com
